The Elevator

The family were on a short vacation; they had been driving for a long time, and had finally arrived at Niagara Falls in Canada. However, it had started to rain, so Mother and Daddy decided to go shopping in a big mall so they could all stretch their legs.

The mall was beautiful. There was a large atrium with huge tropical plants and bright colored birds in giant cages. In the very center of the atrium was a grand fountain. Directly behind it was a big clear Plexiglas tube that had an elevator in it. From where they stood, it looked as though the elevator went right down into the water. They walked behind it and saw that the elevator shaft formed one side of the water pool, so that when you were on the ground floor, you could see out into the water fountain, which had pretty colored lights going on and off in it.

Now, they had ridden on elevators before, but this one was different. When you went up, the fountain seemed to follow you up until the water reached its peak, and then the water fell back and the elevator kept going to the fourth floor.

Of course, the children had to try it. With much giggling, the family all crowded inside. The children all stood next to the glass front and looked out at the water. Daddy pushed the up button and they started to go up.

“Wow! Does that make my tummy feel funny!” said Mother.

“The floor’s going away!” shouted Miah.

“I’m not looking anymore,” moaned Emily.

“What a wonderful view,” commented Daddy. “Look at how the ceiling seems to rush down and the floor seems to be falling. That’s a neat effect. Too bad it’s only four floors.”

“I don’t think I could stand anymore floors,” Mother said. “Let’s take the escalators back down, Okay?

“I guess so. Little Beni hasn’t let go of my legs yet,” commented Daddy as they got off the elevator.

Everyone agreed that perhaps the escalators would feel safer, and they all giggled as the moving stairs took them down floor by floor. But when they got to the first floor again, Emily said that she wanted to go back up in the elevator.

“I thought you were scared when the floors seemed to fall away,” said Mother.

“I am,” said Emily. “Please can we go again?”

“Well, I’ll take her back up one more time. You others can wait here in this rest area for us.” said Daddy.

“If we stand by the fountain, we can watch you go up,” said Mother.

So Mother, Fawn, Beni, and Miah watched Emily and Daddy go up for another ride. Mother even took a picture as the elevator went slowly up.

When Daddy and Emily came down the escalators again, Fawn asked, ‘Why did you want to go again? It’s scary.”

“Oh, it feels funny, but I decided I’d better get used to it because when Jesus comes again and calls us to come, we’ll be going up to the clouds a lot higher than the elevator, and I want to be in practice when He gets here.”

Mother and Daddy smiled. “I’m glad that even when we’re having fun time my little girl is thinking about Jesus. That shows me that you’re growing up loving God,” said Daddy.

“Let’s remember to thank Jesus for all the ways He uses to help us to remember Him,” said Mother.

“Even glass elevators?” asked Fawn.

“Especially glass elevators,” answered Mother.

God’s Love Reminder Verse:

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:10-11)
