It was July, and the hot, sticky days followed one another like soldiers in file. Dad came home and announced, “We’re all going up to Grandma’s farm for the next few days. We all need a change.”
“Can Jack come too?” asked Fawn.
“Sure, he’d love the pond. Newfoundlands like to swim and around here he doesn’t get much of that.”
All afternoon, Fawn and her family packed the car. They started at four the next morning and drove all day to get to Grandma’s farm. Grandma had a good meal waiting for them on the big wooden table. After supper, Fawn, Emily, Miah, and Beni ran around the barn yelling and whooping and just feeling good. Jack, their Newfoundland dog, waded into the pond and investigated the fish nests. He caused a small rain storm when he got out and shook his coat. All too soon it was time for bed.
Next morning, there was a terrible commotion coming from the pond. Grandpa ran down, but came back very soon laughing.
“Son, you’ll never believe what that fool dog of yours is doing. I’ll admit that when you told me that Newfoundlands were bred to save drowning sailors I thought you might be stretching the truth a bit, but I believe you now.” He started laughing again, “Oh dear, I do believe you now. That dog of yours is down in the pond. Every time one of the ducks tries to go swimming, he rescues it. If they don’t chase out he just carries them out. He’s having an awful time of it trying to keep the ducks from drowning. They are lined up on the shore all around him, clicking and quacking and he can’t turn his back or they try to get in. He’s about barked himself hoarse.”
Everyone went down to watch poor Jack. It was hard to convince him to come out of the pond to have breakfast. After that they had to keep Jack away from the pond except under supervision.
“It just goes to show that what God puts into a critters head to do, he’ll do,” said Grandpa. “That dog has been given an instinct to rescue things from water and he does. It’s too bad we don’t obey God as well as Jack does.”
